Before you can purchase your supplies, you need your muggle money exchanged to the wizarding currency. The goblins at Gringotts Wizarding Bank should be able to help with that.
Gringotts Wizarding Bank is the third quest in the main storyline. You now discovered Diagon Alley, but you only have British Pounds and they do not accept those in Diagon Alley. Go and exchange your money with some Knuts, Sickles, and Galleons and start to go buy you school supplies! Talk to Griphook, he will help you with the transaction.

- Speak to the goblin Griphook

Player: I would like to exchange this into your currency
Griphook: I see. Here you have 250 Gold coins. That should be enough for your supplies. Now go.
Player: Thanks.
How to complete the quest[]
Go straight until you see white building of Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Enter the bank and you will find Griphook at the end of the entrance hall. Talk to him and he will give you your money.
