Conversation[]
Player: Can I help you?
Filtch: Help? Do I look like I need help?
I'm quite capable of detecting when little blighters like you are playing tricks.
Go on, mock me. You can try, but I won't be tricked so easily.
Now, what are you up to?
Dumbledore caused this lack of respect. If only I had the power to string you up by the ankles here in my office.
Player: I just want to help
Filtch: Want to help'? A likely story.
I'll have you know that I am quite capable.
Don't need help from any of you filthy little beasts.
... On the other hand, it shouldn't hurt putting you to work.
As a punishment, that is.
Punishment for this mean-spirited prank that you are clearly trying to pull on me.
Yerse... Now, let me explain what you will need to do.
After Potter and Professor Quirrel were finished messing about down in the underground challenge chambers some years back, Dumbledore charged me with bringing back the Mirror of Erised to its proper place.
Now I pass that task onto you.
Only because I am very busy, you see.
Certainly not because it's dangerous or anything.
Naturally, I would never ask anything of any you students that might put your filthy little lives in any kind of danger.
Very well. Go on then.
You should enter through the trapdoor in the third-floor corridor.
Lucky for you, Hagrid's creature isn't there anymore.
Come back here when you're finished.
Player: I will.
[——— After completion ———]
Player: I've moved the mirror.
Filtch: The mirror is back in its proper place? Good.
Player: about my reward?
Filtch: Your reward?
Why you filthy little... This was a punishment, remember!?
I suppose you go around expecting rewards for every little chore.
Well, it isn't so!
Now leave, or there's detention in it for you.
How to Complete the Task[]
This quest involves navigating the challenges from the end of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and they can be very complicated. If the player has already completed the challenges before receiving the challenge, simply return to the mirror (you can fast-travel there in version 1.1 and later) and interact with it. If you have not yet found the mirror, begin by travelling to the Third Floor Corridor and proceeding to the door to the Challenge Chambers. The three-headed dog segment is skipped, and the Devil's Snare has been mostly removed, only forcing you to navigate a short passage with Lumos.
The first intact challenge chamber involves flying the provided Basic Brooms to catch the key to the first chamber. You cannot fly your own broom in this chamber, only the provided brooms. The correct key is slightly brighter than the others and is the only one you can catch (and so the only one that will be highlighted if your settings allow it) but is still extremely hard to identify or catch. This section will be mostly based on luck.
McGonagall's chess puzzle works as follows: align the four chess blocks up with the matching posts. Two switches exist to block the path of the blocks on the far side of the room: one that will lock the piece next to the Bishop posts in place, and one that will allow you to redirect pieces into the middle of the board, which we will call the "Redirect Switch". You will notice that the pieces are in close to proper order: the Bishop and Pawn must be swapped, and the Knight and Rook must be swapped. The simplest way to do this is as follows. From the starting positions, throw the Redirect Switch, and pull the Bishop piece towards the Bishop slot, causing it to be stopped by the barrier you raised with the switch. Move the Bishop piece into the center of the board. Next, raise the switch back into its starting position and pull the Pawn piece into the Pawn slot, though it will not remain there. Pull the Bishop back to the edge of the board and then into its proper corner. The two pieces are now in the correct order. Now, rotate the four pieces clockwise until the Knight and Rook are at the far side of the board, i.e. in similar positions as the Pawn and Bishop. Swap them into the correct order exactly like you did the Pawn and Bishop. Rotate the pieces clockwise again, leaving the Knight and Rook in their final positions. Pull the Bishop into its final position, then lock it using the other switch that we have been ignoring. Finally, pull the Pawn into its final position.
Quirrel's puzzle to defeat a troll is simple: simply kill the Troll marked "Key Bearer" for a key. As with all Trolls, this is a long process but can be sped up a bit with Dumgbombs to cause poison damage.
Snape's logic puzzle can be worked out through logical deduction. The correct answer is the smallest potion, third from the left. Once drunk, the player can pass through the fire on the left.
A pile of treasures and the mirror are found in the next room. Interact with the mirror while the quest is active to move it to another room. Then speak to Filtch.
