Professor Severus Snape is the potions master at Hogwarts, and while talented he isn't particularly patient. Be sure to follow his instructions carefully in this class where you will be taught the art of potion brewing.
Potions class (12th quest of the main storline) teaches you Potion brewing - a skill that lets you brew various potions in cauldrons. In order to pass this lesson, professor Snape tasks you with gathering ingredients and brewing a Murtlap Essence.

Severus Snape:
There will be no foolisch wand waving or silly incantations in this class.
As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion brewing.
However for those select few who posess the predisposition,
I can teach you how to bewitch the mind, and ensnare the senses,
I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper in death.
In this lesson you wil be brewing the "Murtlap Essence" potion,
which when consumed will restore a significant amount of your health.
For this you need a veriety of potion supplies that are scattered in and around this room.
You may begin.
See if you can make it through the obstacle course.

Now that you have gathered the required supplies you may proceed to brew your potion. Interact with a brewing stand by pressing F, and press F again once you have selected the potion you wish to brew.

To consume your potion you must place it in one of your two quick slots. Inspect the potion in your inventory and select 'Move to quick slot'.

This will suffice for now. You now know how to utilise brewing stands to brew potions with different effects. Your next lesson is Charms with Professor Flitwick. Where you will be learning the spell 'Brackium Emendo'. You may head there when you please.
