The supplies list attached to the letter from Hogwarts specifies that students are to purchase a set of books: The Standard Book of Spells, by Miranda Goshawk; Advanced Potion Making, by Libatius Borage; and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander. These Books can be purchased at Flourish & Blotts.
Purchase School Books is the 5th quest in the main storyline. You need to buy some school books for your wizarding studies, and Flourish & Blotts is the perfect place for that. You will not directly use these books in any of you classes, but it is still required to buy the books.

How to complete the quest[]
Walk out of the wand shop and start walking towards Flourish and Blotts, which should be further up Diagon Alley and away from Gringotts. It is a green building with a big sign that says "Flourish and Blotts" that you should find on the left side of the street. After you enter the shop, talk to Booker Blotts, the owner of the shop, behind the counter and buy all the books that the game lets you.
